Ray: I’m a big fan of Will Smith. His success is in the most difficult industry to obtain greatness is certainly no fluke. Take a few moments to listen to his philosophy. Like, really listen.
Ray: If I could choose any job in the world, it would be the one belonging to Antonio “L.A.” Reid. Although I remember hearing Andre 3000 mention his name in an old Outkast song, I never knew who he was until I considered a career in the music business. But after hearing terrible song after terrible song on the radio and stupid video after stupid video on television, I became uninterested in pursuing a career in the music business. However, I must say that after listening to this interview he brings up a lot of the same feelings I once had in college. Anyone looking for a behind the scenes career in music should definitely know about L.A. Reid. He’s pretty inspirational:
Ray: I already said what I had to say about Tyler Perry in a post last year. But I had to post what my favorite cartoon said about the media mogul. For the record, I still like Tyler Perry but this is funny:
Ray: You’re supposed to buy albums made by the people you want to continue to make albums. Get me? That’s why I feel the need to push Amerie. If you read this blog (not sure why you would), you would know that I’ve been a huge supporter of hers since day -1. That means I knew about her before any radio station chose to play her music.
As of now, she’s on album #4. The problem is, I don’t think too many people are buying her music. And it’s not because she sucks. I blame it on the marketing plan and not touring with the right people. But the fact of the matter is that if you appreciate GREAT R&B like I do, then you’ll probably love Amerie.
When I describe her to people, I always say that she’s SWV wrapped into one person. Not only is she outrageously beautiful, but her powerful voice and hip hop influenced rhythm is a diamond in the rough when compared to modern R&B. I believe in good music, not gimmicks. I wanted to play a few of my favorite tracks but I have so many that it’s hard to pick. Amerie is the real deal and here’s a reminder of why you should buy her s$%t.
That’s What You Are:
Seth: I don’t know if I’m late, but on my drive home last week I heard a song, Somebody Come Get Me, by Melanie Fiona. If you haven’t heard the song, check it out. This is her, apparently in someone’s backyard with no track or instrumentation. She sounds good to me.
I recently saw the movie Shutter Island, and this song by Dinah Washington runs during the credits. It’s not the original music, but I think the update (and adaptation to the film) does her voice and the lyrics justice. If you haven’t seen the film, please do. I highly recommend it.
Lastly, a song by U2 entitled Staring at the Sun, in honor of the beautiful weather here in Philadelphia.
