Copernicus – The Multi-Million Dollar Renaissance Man

19 Jun

Ray: Nicolaus Copernicus is a very famous guy. Even if you’ve never heard of him, you should know that he’s responsible for altering your universe and putting all of mankind in it’s place. His gift to the human race was a book that he wrote titled De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium or “On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres”. On Tuesday, an original copy of the book sold at a private auction in New York City for $2.2 Million Dollars.

Copernicus (February 19, 1473 – May 24, 1543) was the first to formulate the theory that the Earth was not the center of the Universe. Through observation using the naked eye and extreme genius, he determined that the earth actually orbited the sun. This shocking discovery shook the very foundations of the Catholic church which dominated all forms of thought and politics in Europe during those day.

His discovery is significant for a number of reasons, but the most important of them is that it proved religion does not dictate science. He gave freedom to later scientists who were afraid to conduct research that might prove contradictory to the teachings of the church. Because of Copernicus, advances in all forms of scientific research were able to take place through the ability to separate science from popular religion.
