Irony – George W. Bush and Saddam Hussein

Ray: Irony = an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected.

Washington D.C. – President George W. Bush awarded Saddam Hussein with the Medal of Freedom in December, 2005 for his work defining U.S. policy on torture, the use of chemical weapons and domestic surveillance.

“Some are born to greatness. Others achieve greatness. Still others have greatness thrust upon them. Saddam Hussein is one of those people,” said Bush prior to presenting Saddam Hussein with the medal.

And the irony is…

…That, in the “commercial” sphere of influence, the Bush administration has been a staunch & consistent advocate of the waterboarding technique, not to speak of the “underground” feats of the CIA.

…That , although designed to sway the masses under the ravenous psychological waters of fear as an effective political tool, the Bush administration has ultimately managed to educate the people on how to vote with their heads.

…That “freedom”, so many times uttered by Bush, is now coming coming back like a boomerang flying in opposite spin–witht a twist of negativity– a meaning “by negation” that actually puts the emphasis on not drinking pestilent water, on not living without electricity, on not having to (literally and metaphorically) cross death on the way to work etc.

…Found in the fact that the noble undertaking is most adamantly reflected in the babylonian sunlight that peers through the oil fields–the safest places in the country

…That there is no irony in substance, only the dry sarcasm that animates the minds that actually saw it coming, and now see no other way than the way out.

…Apart maybe for that ‘Patriot Act’ denomination of a bill that makes it so difficult for many Americans to proudly identify with their current administrative regime…now that’s real irony.
