How Smart (or Dumb) is Seth?

10 Jul

Ray: Can Seth figure this out by the end of the day? Doubt it. What about you?

1. Riddle me thoughts or riddle me things; What eleven coins make a dollar-nineteen?

2. I have 10 US Bills that total to $143.00. What 10 bills do I have?

    :: hand raised :: I know! I know!
    dollar*

    1. 1 silver dollar ($1.00) + 1 dime ($0.10) + 9 pennies ($0.09) = 11 coins ($1.19)

    2. 1 Hundred dollar bill ($100.00) + 2 Ten dollar bills ($20.00) + 4 Five dollar bills ($20.00) + 3 One dollar bills ($3.00) = 10 bills ($143.00)

I got the first one in about 8 minutes and the second one in 2 minutes. Neither of them did I do it the same way as that young lady. Can anyone find other ways?

pat on the back for me.

    1. 3 quarters, 4 dimes, 4 pennies
    .75 + .40 + .04 = $1.19

    2. 1, $50 bill + 4, $20 bills + 2, $5 bills + 3, $1 bills = $143
    (50 + 80 + 10 + 3 = 143)

thinkeR, you got the second one the same way as I, but not the first one. So we know there are at least three ways to do it. I’ll be sure to post it before I leave work this evening.

    1. got it the same way as Seth and Thinker

    2. 7 20s ($140) + 3 singles ($1) = $143

both took me a minute a piece to figure out…easier because the singles or pennies were givens in the equations.

    correction…typo…

    2. 7 20s ($140) + 3 singles ($3) = $143

    Daniela,
I like the simplicity of #2. Unfortunately, in my rush for freedom yesterday I didn’t post my solution to #2 (you know how it is when youi’re trying to leave the office). Here it is:

    1 Grant- 50
    4 Jacksons- 80
    2 Lincolns- 10
    3 Washingtons- 3

    1: 4 pennies 3 nickels, 4 quaters= 11 coins
    0.04 + 0.15 + 1.00 = $1.19

    2: (3)( $1s)+ (1) ($50s)+ (3)($10) + (3)($20s) = $143 in 10 bills
